Roles and Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities of an Assistant Driller: 1. Assist in Drilling Operations Support the Driller in managing and monitoring the drilling process. Ensure the drill floor and rig equipment are operated safely and efficiently. Help maintain proper well control procedures. 2. Supervision of Drilling Crew Supervise the roughnecks, derrickmen, and other floorhands during operations. Delegate tasks and ensure they are completed safely and on time. Train junior crew members on safety and equipment handling. 3. Safety and Compliance Enforce safety standards and proper rig procedures at all times. Conduct safety drills, toolbox talks, and risk assessments. Report incidents or unsafe behavior to the Driller or Rig Manager. 4. Equipment Monitoring and Maintenance Ensure drilling equipment and tools are maintained and functioning properly. Oversee the rig-up and rig-down processes. Monitor mud systems and ensure proper handling and disposal. 5. Reporting and Documentation Maintain logs of drilling activities, equipment usage, and crew performance. Assist in writing reports on daily drilling activities for the Driller or Supervisor. Record data such as depth, mud weight, and pump pressure. 6. Communication and Coordination Relay instructions from the Driller to the crew clearly and effectively. Liaise with other departments like Mud Logging, Geology, or Cementing teams. Keep the Driller informed of any issues or irregularities.
