A floorman, or floorhand, plays a critical role on a drilling rig by supporting the safe and efficient operation of drilling activities. One of their main tasks is to handle, connect, and disconnect drill pipe, casing, and other tubulars during tripping operations. They also operate and maintain rig floor equipment such as tongs, slips, elevators, and rotary tools used in the drilling process. Floormen assist in assembling and dismantling rig components and drilling tools, both on the rig floor and in other work areas. They are responsible for cleaning and maintaining the rig floor, keeping it free from debris, oil, and mud to prevent accidents and maintain safety standards. Another important task is to support mud mixing operations, helping to monitor fluid levels and ensure the proper functioning of mud systems. Routine inspection of rig equipment is also expected, with any damage or malfunction reported to supervisors immediately. Floormen must strictly follow safety procedures, wear personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times, and participate in regular safety drills. They work closely with other rig crew members such as the Derrickman, Motorman, and Driller, often performing physically demanding labor in remote locations and extreme weather conditions.
