A floorman (also known as a roughneck) is a key member of the drilling crew who works on the rig floor under the direction of the driller and assistant driller. The floorman performs physically demanding tasks and plays a critical role in the safe and efficient operation of drilling activities. Key Responsibilities: 🔧 1. Handling Drill Pipe and Equipment Make and break drill pipe connections using tongs or iron roughnecks. Assist in tripping pipe (removing or inserting drill pipe into the well). Operate and maintain equipment such as tongs, elevators, slips, and wrenches. 🛠️ 2. Rig Floor Operations Maintain a clean and organized rig floor. Follow instructions from the driller and assistant driller during drilling operations. Help run casing, tubing, and other downhole tools. ⚙️ 3. Equipment Maintenance Inspect and perform basic maintenance on rig floor tools and machinery. Report any equipment damage or malfunction immediately. Lubricate and clean drilling components to ensure smooth operations. 👷 4. Safety and Compliance Wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times. Follow all safety procedures and participate in safety meetings. Be alert to potential hazards and respond to emergencies effectively. 🚿 5. General Rig Support Assist with the movement of tools and supplies around the rig. Help in loading/unloading supply trucks. Support other rig departments as needed, including mud or shale shaker areas. Skills and Attributes Needed: Good physical strength and stamina. Ability to work in extreme weather and remote locations. Strong teamwork and communication skills.
