Roles and Responsibilities

A Driller is one of the most critical crew members on an onshore drilling rig. They operate drilling equipment, supervise the drill floor crew, ensure well control, and maintain safe and efficient operations during drilling, tripping, and other rig activities. The Driller works under the Toolpusher and supervises the Derrickman, Floorman/Roughnecks, and sometimes the Shaker Hand. The Driller operates: Drawworks,Top drive or rotary table,Mud pumps ,Pipe-handling equipment,Iron Roughneck (if equipped) BOP control panel,Catheads / winches, Auxiliary hoisting and lifting equipments. The Driller is responsible for: Making hole (drilling ahead). Running and pulling drill string (tripping). Setting casing and cementing operations, Monitoring drilling parameters such as: Weight on bit (WOB). Rate of penetration (ROP). Pump pressure, Hook load, Torque, Mud pit levels. Well Monitoring Detect abnormal pressures, Recognize drilling trends and formation changes, Identifying kick warning signs earla, Maintain proper drilling parameters according to the drilling program Well Control Responsibilities Well control is one of the most critical duties of a Driller. Kick Detection The Driller must continuously monitor: Mud pit gain or loss, Flow rate increase, Pump pressure changes, Gas readings on surface equipment, Changes in torque or hook load, BOP Operation The Driller must: Operate Blowout Preventer (BOP) panels during emergencies or drills, Ensure appropriate accumulator pressure, Function test BOPs as per schedule (under supervision of Toolpusher) Emergency Response Initiate shut-in procedures when signs of a kick appear, Follow established well control protocols (e.g., Driller’s Method, Wait-and-Weight) Maintain communication with the Toolpusher, Mud Engineer, and Company Man.
