ROLE OF A RIG ELECTRICIAN Purpose of the Position • Guarantee the continuous and safe availability of electrical power and electrically-driven equipment on a drilling or work-over rig • Prevent unplanned shutdowns that could jeopardize well control, production targets, personnel safety, or environmental compliance. Core Responsibilities A. Power Generation & Distribution – Operate, maintain and troubleshoot diesel-electric or gas-turbine generators (350 kW – 2 MW each). – Inspect switchboards, motor-control centers (MCCs), transformers, UPS and battery banks. – Synchronize generators, balance loads, and manage blackout recovery procedures. B. Drilling Package Equipment – Service SCR/VFD houses, top drives, drawworks motors, mud-pump motors, rotary table or AC traction motors. – Calibrate and repair soft starters, PLC and HMI interfaces, encoder feedback loops and braking resistors. C. Rig Services & Utilities – Lighting systems, hazardous-area fixtures (Ex d/e/n), marine navigational lights. – HVAC motors, potable-water makers, sewage treatment, galley and accommodation electrical circuits. – Cranes, catwalks, pipe-handling robots, cement units and BOP accumulator chargers. D. Instrumentation & Safety Systems – Gas-detection loops, fire-and-gas panels, ESD (Emergency Shut-Down) circuits, PA/GA, UPS/IPS. – Weekly function tests of lifeboat release, fire pumps, beacon lights, helideck status lights, etc. E. Preventive / Corrective Maintenance / Corrective Maintenance – Execute PMs generated from a CMMS (AMOS, SAP, MAXIMO). – Keep logbooks, update single-line diagrams, tag-out/lock-out (LOTO) paperwork. – Order spares, liaise with shore base, prepare repair scopes for third-party vendors. operator HSE teams. Typical Daily Routine • Toolbox talk / simultaneous operations review. • Walkdown: check generator temps/pressures, MCC panel meters, • Complete planned maintenance on top-drive motor brushes. Assist Driller: intermittent SCR fault during tripping – diagnose thyristor stack and fiber-optic firing cards. CompEx inspection of new portable winch plug; update hazardous-area register. • Blackout drill with Engine Room – start standby generator, close tie breaker, restore hotel load. • 18:00 Close work orders, file permits, sign Required Competencies Technical – Strong knowledge of three-phase power, HV (>1 kV), marine earthing, insulation resistance, harmonics.
