A Senior Dynamic Positioning Operator (SDPO) on a drillship is a critical leadership role responsible for maintaining precise vessel positioning using advanced Dynamic Positioning (DP) systems during drilling operations, well interventions, and other demanding offshore activities. This includes operating DP equipment in automatic and manual modes, including joysticks, while supervising junior DPOs and ensuring seamless team coordination on the bridge. Acting as Officer of the Watch (OOW), the SDPO oversees navigational safety, stands transit watches, and monitors radar, ECDIS, and AIS for collision avoidance per COLREGS. Key responsibilities encompass continuous monitoring of vessel stability, ballast systems, power management, and thruster performance; conducting DP capability analyses tailored to specific well programs and environmental conditions; and performing Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) checks to mitigate risks. The role extends to safety and compliance: maintaining Life Saving Appliances (LSA) and Fire Fighting (FF) equipment in line with the Barge Master's directives and SOLAS standards; serving as Permit To Work (PTW) controller to register, issue, and close all hot work, confined space, and lifting permits; coordinating with the drill floor, OIM, and engine team via clear VHF/UHF communications; updating bridge and DP logbooks meticulously; and participating in emergency drills, toolbox talks, and risk assessments per IMCA guidelines. Additionally, the SDPO supports crane lifts, helicopter ops, and supply transfers, reports anomalies to the Master promptly, and contributes to ISM/ISPS audits for operational excellence.
