Roles and Responsibilities
One of the main responsibilities of an offshore steward is housekeeping. This includes daily cleaning of cabins, corridors, offices, mess rooms, and sanitary areas in accordance with company standards and hygiene regulations. The steward ensures proper waste segregation, replenishes consumables, and maintains high levels of cleanliness to support crew health and wellbeing during offshore operations. The role also involves full responsibility for the laundry service. Duties include washing, drying, ironing, folding, and distributing crew clothing, workwear, and bed linen. Knowledge of industrial laundry equipment, fabric care, and chemical handling is essential to maintain quality and prevent damage to garments. In addition, the offshore steward provides assistance in the galley, supporting the cook or chef when required. This may include food preparation, vegetable cutting, dishwashing, cleaning kitchen equipment, and maintaining galley hygiene standards. The steward helps ensure compliance with food safety regulations and assists during meal service, especially during peak periods. Overall, an offshore steward must be reliable, flexible, and service-oriented, with good knowledge of housekeeping procedures, laundry operations, and basic galley support. The role contributes significantly to crew comfort, morale, and the smooth daily operation of the vessel.
