Responsibilities of a Boatswain A Boatswain (Bosun) is a senior deck crew member on a ship who reports directly to the Chief Officer (Chief Mate). The bosun supervises deck operations and ensures maintenance work is carried out properly and safely. Deck Crew Supervision Lead and supervise Able Seamen (AB) and Ordinary Seamen (OS) Assign daily work as instructed by the Chief Officer Ensure tasks are completed safely and efficiently Train and guide junior crew members Maintenance Duties Supervise maintenance of: Deck machinery (windlass, winches, cranes) Mooring equipment Cargo gear Lifeboats and life-saving appliances Oversee chipping, painting, cleaning, and greasing Ensure proper upkeep of ropes, wires, and chains Mooring and Anchoring Operations Take charge during: Mooring/unmooring Anchoring operations Ensure mooring lines are handled safely Coordinate with bridge and engine room during operations Cargo Operations Support Assist in preparation of cargo gear Supervise deck crew during cargo loading/unloading Ensure safety procedures are followed Safety Responsibilities Ensure crew use proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) Participate in safety drills (fire, abandon ship, man overboard) Help maintain firefighting equipment on deck Report hazards or unsafe conditions Inventory and Equipment Control Monitor deck stores and tools Report damaged or missing equipment Assist Chief Officer with spare parts requests Important Skills of a Good Bosun Leadership and communication skills Strong seamanship knowledge Experience in mooring and deck machinery Safety awareness Ability to work under pressure
