Roles and Responsibilities

The most visible responsibility is the movement of equipment, supplies, and personnel between vessels or from a vessel to a platform. This involves:Constantly monitoring the crane’s Rated Capacity Indicator (RCI) to ensure loads do not exceed safety limits based on the boom angle and radius.Adjusting movements to account for "dynamic loading" caused by the heaving of the sea, which can suddenly increase the tension on the hoist lines. Before every shift, the operator is responsible for the integrity of their machine. This includes: Checking hydraulic systems for leaks and ensuring fluid levels are optimal. Inspecting wire ropes for fraying, "bird-caging," or kinking. Testing emergency shut-off systems and limit switches to ensure fail-safe mechanisms are functional.Safety in offshore lifting is a team effort. The operator must: Maintain constant radio or hand-signal contact with the Banksman and Slingers. Cease operations immediately if a "Stop" signal is given by anyone on the deck, regardless of their rank. While heavy repairs are handled by mechanics, the operator is the first line of defense in maintenance. They must: Perform routine lubrication of moving parts and sheaves. Identify and report unusual noises, vibrations, or sluggish controls before they escalate into mechanical failures.Operating a crane in a maritime environment requires strict adherence to international standards (such as API or BS EN). Responsibilities include: Maintaining an accurate Crane Logbook detailing hours of operation and lifts performed. Ensuring all lifting gear (slings, shackles, and spreaders) have valid certification tags.

Additional Skills/Certification

Certifications: Crane Operator License (Stage 2/3), HUET/BOSIET. Skills: Load Management, Risk Assessment, Mechanical Aptitude, Emergency Response.
