Roles and Responsibilities
Core Responsibilities The role is a mix of personnel management, technical oversight, and logistics. Here is what a typical night looks like: 1. Operational Oversight • Supervising the Driller: Monitoring the drilling process to ensure parameters (weight on bit, pump pressure, RPM) align with the drilling program. • Problem Solving: Being the first point of contact if the drill string gets stuck, if there are unexpected pressure changes, or if mechanical failures occur. • Reporting: Compiling the IADC Daily Drilling Report, which tracks every foot drilled and every penny spent during the shift. 2. Safety & Compliance • Permit to Work (PTW): Reviewing and signing off on high-risk permits (confined space, hot work, etc.). • Safety Drills: Often responsible for conducting kick drills or fire drills to ensure the night crew is just as sharp as the day crew. • BOP Readiness: Ensuring the Blowout Preventer and other well-control equipment are fully operational. 3. Logistics & Maintenance • Inventory Management: Tracking drill bits, mud chemicals, and casing. If the rig runs out of supplies at 3:00 AM, it’s on the Night Pusher. • Preventative Maintenance: Coordinating with the Rig Mechanic and Electrician to fix equipment during "connection time" to minimize downtime.
