Roles and Responsibilities
A Rig Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of all mechanical equipment on a drilling rig to ensure smooth and safe operations. The mechanic performs regular preventive maintenance on equipment such as mud pumps, drawworks, top drives, rotary tables, diesel engines, air compressors, and hydraulic systems. This includes checking oil levels, greasing moving parts, replacing filters, tightening bolts, and inspecting components for wear and damage. Troubleshooting mechanical problems is a key duty. The Rig Mechanic must quickly identify faults, repair or replace defective parts, and minimize downtime during drilling operations. They work with hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems and must understand equipment drawings and manuals. Safety is a major responsibility. The mechanic follows company HSE policies, uses proper personal protective equipment (PPE), and ensures tools and machinery are operated safely. They also respond to emergency breakdowns and support other departments when required. In addition, the Rig Mechanic maintains maintenance records, reports equipment conditions to the Chief Mechanic or Rig Manager, and helps manage spare parts inventory. Basic welding and fabrication work may also be required. Overall, the Rig Mechanic plays a vital role in maintaining equipment reliability, operational efficiency, and workplace safety on the rig.
