Roles and Responsibilities

Responsibilities 1. Sample Collection & Preparation · Collect rock cutting samples at regular intervals (e.g., every 1–5 meters) from the shale shakers. · Wash, dry, and bag samples according to the wellsite geological program. · Ensure samples are properly labeled with depth and time. 2. Geological Description · Describe lithology (rock type), color, grain size, texture, and fossils using a microscope. · Identify and record signs of hydrocarbons (e.g., oil stains, odor, fluorescence under UV light). · Log all descriptions into a digital or written mud log. 3. Gas Detection & Analysis · Operate and calibrate the gas chromatograph to measure total gas and individual components (methane, ethane, propane, etc.). · Monitor real-time gas levels and identify gas ratio trends (e.g., wet gas vs. dry gas). · Immediately report any abnormal gas "kicks" or pressure spikes to the drilling team. 4. Drilling Data Monitoring · Record and track drilling parameters: Rate of Penetration (ROP), Weight on Bit (WOB), pump pressure, torque, and mud flow. · Integrate gas data with drilling parameters to interpret subsurface formations. · Identify drilling hazards like overpressure zones or lost circulation. 5. Reporting & Communication · Prepare daily geological reports (morning reports) for the operator and office geologists. · Update the real-time mud log plot continuously. · Communicate directly with the company man, tool pusher, and drilling engineer about any geological changes or risks. 6. Equipment Maintenance · Perform daily checks and basic maintenance on gas detection equipment, microscopes, and computers. · Troubleshoot and fix minor technical issues with the logging unit. 7. Well Safety Support · Act as an early warning system for potential well control issues (kicks, high background gas). · Assist in distinguishing between background gas and connection gas. 8. Final Sample Archiving · Package and label final dried sample sets for shipment to the operator's office or warehouse at the end .
