Description

During my four years of study at the University of Aberdeen my course covered a wide variety of geological processes and associated applications and techniques. These included Petrology & Mineralogy, Structural Geology & Tectonics, Petroleum Geology, Interpreting the Subsurface and a dissertation on a Geological Mapping Project. For my dissertation, I spent 7 weeks mapping an area of 22km2 that involved independent study and walking extensively in North West Scotland. The project involved surveying numerous out crops and recording data into note books and field slips which subsequently enabled a full description of the arrangement and boundary of the rocks units, an accurate cross-sections from surface exposure above and below ground. Digitalized field slips were created using CORELDRAW (ArcGIS) to produce the fair copy map to help explain my findings. From this I learned: ? Resilience ? Resourcefulness ? Problem solving ? Being proactive ? Health & safety aware ? Long working hours ? Lone working ? Adverse working conditions ? Team working ? Data recording ? Self-reliance ? Work planning
